Another Disney Masterpiece

Reviewed by Demo on September 10, 2006  |  report this review

Kingdoms Hearts II improves on the great (but flawed) formula of the original game.

Improvements:
+ Camera system is vastly improved
+ Combat is fun and fluid
+ One of the best looking (if not best) games on your PS2
+ The story is much darker and mature than before
+ Worlds that feel apart of their movie counterparts than before
+ Play as Roxas, Sora, and Mickey

Cons:
- While there are more options during combat, you'll most likely refer to button mashing or using a single button.
- It would have been nice to see more FF characters or possibly a FF "World"

Overall, the game's story and improvements more than make up for the game's let-downs
5/5

Kingdom Hearts 2 is the sequel to Kingdom hearts one, which was one of the best Square Enix game. One year after Kingdom Hearts one; Sora, Donald and Goofy awake from a deep sleep after the events of chains of memories. Now awake, they embark in one final adventure to find the king, and Riku. You travel through Disney Worlds and original, hoping to find them however you stumble across and organization called: Organization 13; a bunch of nobodies who want one thing; to be somebodies. A nobody is a creature that is born when ever a heartless is defeated. You first play as Roxas; a boy living in Twilight Town who keeps having dreams and flashbacks about Sora's adventure in Kingdom Heart 1. You then encounter nobodies and have a keyblade. Why does Roxas have flashbacks, why did a keyblade choose him and why are there people in hoodies chasing him? I won't spoil it, or tell you what happens you'll have to find out yourself.

The gameplay has improved. You now can control who Donald and Goofy fight, so that it's easy for you. They decided to make the game user friendly, rather than before. The AI has improved; making the game more challenging. You now have a drive from, meter. Drive form is when you combine either Donald or Goofy into yourself and you end up with astonishing results. You become faster and even have two keyblades, with Goofy meaning your strong as hell. With Donald you become extremely slippery, smooth and fast. You also are able to shoot with your Keyblade at far enemies. Also if you join them together you get master form; I won't spoil that for you. You get these at different stages of the game. Using this drains your drive meter. You also have levels for your drive form and when you ascend you get more abilities.

You still have magic and all off that. You can now equip yourself with abilities; these could be from having a strong block or even increasing a magic spell. You also have an AP meter, which allows you to use up to a certain number of abilities. You also now have a limit meter. When you're in a tight spot or with a party member you can use a limit command and you do a combo move with the certain party member. If you got to abilities you can use this as a reaction command. A reaction command is when you can press triangle and you do a reaction. For example, you're facing a nobody and you press the reaction command; you then go behind them and attack. You can summon like before but this time it wastes you drive gauge.

The graphics haven't improved greatly from the first Kingdom Hearts and at times look outdated. However special cut scenes look marvelous. The sound is at its best. After playing you'll go out humming the music which makes you experience the game more and more. The Disney characters and worlds in the game have improved. There are more worlds from cartoon to real. Also if you enter a world you become adapted to that world via appearance or costume e.g. In the Lion King World you become a lion and in Hallow

Good, but not great!

I love the Kingdom Hearts series, and this game impressed me with its variety of characters and gorgeous worlds. However, I found myself disappointed with the overall game as it had way too much talking and way too many cut-scenes for my tastes. I wanted to play an actual game, not watch seemingly endless videos! It also seemed to take forever to level up, which was frustrating. Overall, it's a good game, but I don't like it nearly as much as I liked the first one!

This is a RPG that is great, I love this game, disney meets final fantasy how can you go wrong. Its way to good of an rpg to pass up. The story is sadder, and better, and the gameplay is totally better then the first, this is a must for everyone.

...is beautiful! It's truly a masterpiece, with beautiful graphics and cutscenes, great voice acting and character development. I give it four stars because there was a world or two that I didn't like (Tron World). I thought the first one was going to be silly and for children, but I was wrong! This can be played and loved by any demographic. It's a common misconception that this game is for children. It is not all about Disney, It has a lot of FF characters and not to mention the moogles! You play as Sora (except for the first hour or two where you play as Roxas), a teenager who is one of very few keyblade wielders who is trying to save the world from Organization XIII one world at a time!

This is by far the most fun game I have played in...ever!! The story's main characters are well written, (Though some times hokey) and the cutscenes are the most spectacular I've seen on PS2. The fight system is simple but fun and the customizations are endless! The gummi levels have been vastly improved (Very Star Fox), and are far less frustrating.

This game is spectacular I give it 5 stars!

This is the best sequel(even though really it is a third game) that i have ever played. It picks up right where chain of memories left off and has better graphics and much more challenging bosses than the first one and makes KH1 seem a shame. It has also added lotsa other places to visit from disney and other stuff including: Pirates od the Carribean, Tron, The lion King, and much, much more!KH congrats a second 5 out of 5 from me!

Tetsuya Nomura and the creators of Kingdom Hearts have struck gold again in this wonderfully put together game. Every aspect of this game has been evenly distributed for a great gaming experience. The story once again was amazing and during gameplay one actually felt as if they were part of the Kingdom Hearts world. The game did not disappoint with the graphics and cut scenes keeping the player on there toes and trying to finish a mission to be rewarded with another clue to the stories elaborate plot. During gameplay there was an even mix between graphics and fluidity of movement between the camera and character attacks and movements making some amazing battles. The music helps contribute to getting a sense of the mood along with scenes throughout the worlds. The customization of weapons, accessories and other items also give the player a sense of there own "touch". All of these things and the amazing story that has the disney touch of genius is pleasing for all players and is definitely recommended for someone who has time and wanta a great experience.

It had more twists than a giant pretzel! it was like a movie except like a bajillion times awsomer cooler and in the words of fun station funner! any1 that has a playstation 2 and a gba shud play this series. and if u dont have a ps2 or gba... borrow some1 elses or go get 1! this game brought many new elements to the game including new clothes, i liked old clothes i didnt think they could get better but they did, the new charge feature, i liked the 2 keyblades at once, and new characters and worlds like roxas and pirates. if u have a chance get this game i dont care if it is a bajillion dollars get it at all costs get a divorce, get married, heck even rob a bank (but keep it on the DL and i want a cut) just get this flippin game! BTW i was just kidding bout robbing a bank. And i dont care wut people say about it being disney childish, the only thing disney about it is scenery and characters, the plot takes the classic disney movies and makes them seem a bajillion times better. P.S. sry for my over use of the word bajillion people tell me i say it like a bajillion times a day...

If you haven't picked up Kingdom Hearts or Chain of Memories just yet, do yourself a favor and track those titles down, because they really are quite good. However, there's a secondary reason why you might want to take a look at them, which is immediately apparent as soon as you start a new game of Kingdom Hearts II (things are definitely much less confusing if you happen to have a bit of background with the previous adventures). The reason being, is that Kingdom Hearts II not only summarizes the prior titles via a number of quick expository cuts, but to a degree, it also explores a couple of existentialist arguments. This isn't to say that newcomers will be lost by picking up Kingdom Hearts II, but they will also find themselves swimming in details.

Fortunately, for the completely confused, Jiminy Cricket's journal provides an excellent fountain of knowledge about the adventure. Jiminy tracks everything from character connections in a particular area to major plot points, writing up summaries that can be accessed at any time. It even holds lists of enemies that you've defeated, as well as specific missions, item synthesis notes and treasure that you've found. It's a great thing to refer to if you're confused on the somewhat convoluted plot, and much better than the similar tool found in the original.

Anyhow, taking up shortly after the events of Chain of Memories, Kingdom Hearts II introduces players to Roxas, a young boy living in Twilight Town on his summer vacation. A likable kid that enjoys hanging out with his friends and exploring the city, Roxas is also plagued by memories and images of someone he doesn't know. Seeking the cause of these visions leads Roxas to discover his connection to Sora and the Keyblade. Picking up the main story from there, the plot follows Sora and his search for his friends Riku and Kairi, as well as King Mickey throughout a number of Disney worlds. It also introduces new enemies, known as Nobodies, and an ominous organization controlling their activities called "Organization XIII". To go over any other plot points would spoil the 30+ hour main quest

Kingdom Hearts 2 is the sequal to the first dinsey square enix hit, Kingdom Hearts. The first game was great and this one is even better. It introduces you to lovable characters and a great story much more mature than the first one. The combat system is excellent. Think of God of War, but with a rpg. The reaction commands are terrific addition as well as the stellar combos and abilities you can purchase. Voice acting is good and the graphics are top notch for the ps2, especially the beginning and ending scenes. With over 40 hours of gameplay in three different difficulites you will never want to put this game down. The extras are also great and any disney or final fantasy fan will be pleased to see their favorite characters. It improves on the first in almost every way, which is saying alot since the first was also a good game.

Basically, if you enjoyed the first one, you're going to enjoy the second one. They fixed the Gummi Ship, there are some new worlds and new characters, and unlike the first Kingdom Hearts it doesn't have an ending that makes you think, "Wait, so everything I did was basically just for nothing?"

There's a lot of unlockable stuff as side missions for people who like depth and replay in their single player RPGs. Expect about a 30-hour playthrough without bothering with the sidequests, and a 50-hour game if you plow them.

I wouldn't recommend this game for casual gamers who haven't played the first, as you're likely going to have one hell of a time dealing with the unintuitive controls. However, if you're already battle tested from the first one, you won't be overwhelmed by anything in Kingdom Hearts 2.

I feel that Kingdom Hearts 2 will be looked upon as one of the "must play" games on the Playstation 2, and while not perfect, original, or surprising, it IS very well put together, very polished, and it is very fun to play.
